Action Required: Help fight invasive weeds
The lake needs your help. This year’s aquatic surveys have identified troublesome invasive weed species in our lake, including Starry Stonewort and Eurasian Milfoil. Starry Stonewort is the most aggressive aquatic species ever observed in Michigan and is able to out compete all other Michigan plant species. It grows very densely and spreads quickly. It forms very dense mats of vegetation near the surface, which choke out native plants and aquatic life. The mats interfere with activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating, which in turn lower property values. The invasive weed beds are relatively small and inexpensive to treat right now, but they are expected to grow quickly and can become unmanageable financially if not treated early.
Like several of our neighboring lakes, the Shavehead Lake Association is helping to setup a special assessment district (SAD) through the township for managing invasive species. With a SAD, invasive weeds can be treated as soon as they are identified, helping to keep them from spreading. To establish the SAD, we need 51% of the parcel owners to sign a petition in support of the SAD. By now, you should have received an email with a petition for you to sign and return that includes your parcel number. If you are in support of the SAD, please print, fill out, sign, and return soon as possible. It can be scanned and returned, or just take a photo of it and send it back to the email it came from as soon as you get the chance. Thank you for your help to control the invasive weed species and to conserve the lake health.
